Naturopathic medicine gives us the opportunity to look at the bigger picture. Rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation, we can explore how nutrition, hormones, digestion, sleep, stress, lifestyle and other factors may be interconnected. It also allows for a highly individualized approach. Two people with the same symptoms may have very different underlying factors contributing to them, which is why assessment and treatment should be personalized to the individual.
I start by listening. A detailed health history helps me understand not only a patient's primary concerns, but also their nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, hormonal health, lifestyle and medical history. When appropriate, I use conventional blood work and functional testing to investigate further. From there, I develop an individualized treatment plan that may include clinical nutrition, lifestyle changes, nutritional and herbal supplementation, exercise, sleep and stress support. I also believe strongly in monitoring progress and adjusting the treatment plan along the way. The goal is to create a plan that is both effective and realistic for the patient's everyday life.
I wish more people knew that naturopathic medicine isn't simply about taking supplements or replacing a medication with an herb. It is about understanding the whole person, asking why symptoms may be occurring and using evidence-informed approaches to support health. I also believe naturopathic and conventional medicine can work very well together. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Patients often benefit most when they have a healthcare team that works collaboratively.
