Naturopathic
medicine is a comprehensive primary health care profession distinctive by its
unique philosophy and practice. It seeks to promote health through education
and the scientific use of natural therapeutics.
The Philosophy of
Naturopathic Medicine
The
philosophical foundation of naturopathic medicine is based on the following five
basic principles:
1.
Prevention: The highest goal of the doctor is to teach people to live a life
that is conducive to good health.
2.
Primum non nocere:
In spite of the best prevention, people will become sick or be injured and in
intervening the doctor must not do further harm to the patient.
3.
Tolle causam:
In treating the sick, the doctor must seek and address the fundamental causes of
the ailment.
4.
Vix medicatrix naturae:
Only Nature heals. It is the innate capacity of the organism that heals itself,
not the intervention of the doctor or the treatment. The doctor’s duty
therefore is to seek to understand, support and accelerate this process inherent
in each individual.
5.
Holism: The holistic approach, intrinsic to naturopathic medicine,
evaluates the patient in his environment, seeks the primary causes of the
ailment, emphasizes approaches that will help to integrate the mental, emotional
and physical aspects of the human being, and encourages spiritual growth.
