The basic
training of naturopathic doctors is comparable to conventional doctors in terms
of basic sciences and hours of training. What distinguishes the naturopathic
medical curriculum is an emphasis in prevention, wholism and the use of natural
therapies.
Prerequisites for admission to naturopathic
medical education:
- Minimum 3
years university education with 3.00/4.00 or equivalent GPA

(hands on supervised treatment of patients in a clinical setting)

Naturopathic
Doctors Licensing Examination (NPLEX)
- NPLEX is
the standardized examination used by all licensed jurisdictions for
naturopathic doctors in North America. They are administered by the North
American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE), and includes:
- 5 basic
sciences exams (anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology
and immunology)
- 10
clinical exams (clinical and physical diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis and
diagnostic imaging, botanical medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, physical
medicine, homeopathy, minor surgery, psychology and lifestyle counseling,
and emergency medicine)

Elective exams (dependent upon jurisdictions)

Naturopathic doctors must pass these exams to be eligible for licensing in all
regulated provinces and states
- Each
jurisdiction may then add jurisprudence and practical exams.
